Her soft blue eyes gently met mine as she walked cautiously down the corridor; peering apprehensively into the row of kennels that greeted her as she did so. I could sense her need instantly and knew I had to do my best to try and help her in any way I could.
That's why I willingly wagged my tail in her direction as she peered into my cage. Not too exuberantly of course, otherwise I might scare her away as she looked a timid sort. Almost unsure if she was making the right decision in coming here.
I could sense her looking me up and down as she gave my kennel a good going over. Blissfully unaware of the little accident at the back of my cage I had masterfully managed to block from her view, not wanting her to know that I hadn't yet been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get a little too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them given how kind they are to all of us animals that they lovingly take into their care.
I bit my tongue and hoped, as she slowly read my kennel card, that she wouldn't get upset or feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want nothing more than to make a positive difference in someone's life. Besides, I've always found that it's not very helpful to carry grudges. Especially to myself!
My heart missed a beat when she got down on her knees and made cute little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the cold bars to comfort her. As gentle fingertips caressed my neck and ears; she was obviously more desperate for companionship than I had originally thought.
A single tear fell down her rosy cheek as she called out my name - so I politely raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I promised there and then to always keep her safe and to never leave her side.
I vowed there and then that I'd do everything within my power to put a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes as often as I could. I also feel blessed that she had decided to come down my corridor at all that day. More so when I think of the great many other out there that have yet to walk her path. The countless others we could save; look after and fill their hearts with love.
At least I could save one and she was certainly well worth saving! That's why I feel so good inside - I helped rescue a human today!
